This publication presents information about carers who provide informal assistance with core activities that is ongoing, or likely to be ongoing, for at least six months. In 2009 there were 2.6 million carers in Australia and a higher proportiojn of women than men were primary carers. Women were about twice as likely to be a primary carer. Caring for others by providing assistance with core activities due to disability of age generally increases with age. 33% of carers also reported having a disability in 2009. Nearly 650,000 carers aged 15 years and over were born in a country other than Australia (26%).
