This publication presents statistics on the number of fetal, neonatal and total perinatal deaths in Victoria by sex and cause of death classified to the World Health Organisation's International Classification of Diseases (ICD) based on the main condition in the mother and main condition in the fetus or infant.

This report includes national and Victorian data on leading causes of death of women. Classification is by National Health Priority Area and International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems code. It also includes data on multiple causes of death and death of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. 

National Health Priority Area classifications include: Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases, Asthma, Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes, Injuries, Mental Health Disorders, and Obesity. 

International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems classifications include: Infectious Diseases, Cancer, Blood and Immunity Disorders, Endocrine, Nutrional and Metabolic Diseases, Mental and Behavioural Disorders, Diseases of the Nervous System, Diseases of the Eye and Ear, Diseases of the Heart and Blood Vessels, Diseases of the Respiratory System, Diseases of the Digestive System, Diseases of the Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue, Diseases of the Muscles, Bones and Tendons, Diseases of the Kidney and Genitourinary system, Pregnancy and Childbirth, Certain Conditions Originating in the Perinatal Period, Congenital and Chromosomal Abnormalities, Ill Defined Causes, External Causes, Transport Accidents, Falls, Accidental Poisoning, Assault, and Intentional Self-Harm [Suicide].
