This data details the patterns of alcohol use of Victorian women since 1998 including the estimated risk of short-term and long-term alcohol related harm for 14-17 year olds, 18-24 year olds and all Victorian women 18 years and over. The proportion of women by drinking status (daily, weekly, less than weekly, ex-drinker and never a full serve of alcohol) is given. Data also includes; the type of alcoholic drinks usually consumed by 16-24 years olds, the estimated alcohol-related inpatient hospitalisations, number of bed days, number of deaths and years of life lost for Victorian women by age group. The percentage of women making alcohol related drug-identified calls to DirectLine help line is reported, separating the calls women made concerning others and the calls made by women for their own alcohol use.  Further Info

The report examines the pattern of alcohol and other drug related harms associated with major public holidays and social events in metropolitan Melbourne for the nine year period 2001-09. Categories and dates of these events were derived from Victorian State Government calendars (public holidays) and online databases (social events). The report describes the general, gender and age pattern of harm for:

  • alcohol intoxication (ambulance attendances,emergency department presentations & hospital admissions)
  • assaults (police recorded assaults and family incidents, emergency department presentations & hospital admissions) and;
  • motor vehicle accidents (serious road incidents & hospital admissions).
Data  were derived from the Ambo Project dataset (which includes all drug and alcohol-related ambulance attendances), VicRoads serious road incident data (detailing motor vehicle accidents), the Victorian Emergency Minimum Dataset (detailing hospital emergency presentations),the Victorian Admitted Episodes Dataset (that includes all hospital separations) and the Victoria Police Law Enforcement Assistance Program (LEAP) database (that includes all police recorded offences).  Further Info

The report shows the alcohol risk of Victorian women by age group including women at low, risky and high risk status. Data includes when women last consumed alcohol. The supplementary data tables within this report show the median age of Victorian women undergoing treatment with drug treatment agencies.  Information is present for women seeking treatment an alcohol, cannabis, heroin or benzodiazepine related problem.  The data also includes the percentage of women seeking treatment and the main treatment type such as withdrawal management, counselling or support and case managment.
